Windows: Establishing a VPN

GlobalProtect, a VPN service, is likely already installed on your university-managed computer. Click the Taskbar corner icons caret to reveal the currently running services on your system, look for and click the GlobalProtect globe icon and connect to the VPN. If this icon is not visible, continue reading.

Software Center to install and use GlobalProtect VPN

Installing the VPN application

Software Center is part of the Microsoft's System Center Configuration Manager.  It allows IT@CPP to deliver, manage, support, and update applications and services across campus.

  1. Double-click the Software Center icon on your desktop to open it.

  2. Or, if you do not see the Software Center icon on your desktop, then you will need to:
    1. Go to and click the Windows Start menu in the lower right corner of your screen.
    2. Select and click Microsoft System Center or it may be called Microsoft Endpoint Manager on your computer.
    3. Click Software Center.
  3. A list of applications will appear.  Double-click GlobalProtect VPN to open it.

  4. Click the Install button.

    Note: You do not need admin rights to install this file onto your computer.

  5. GlobalProtect VPN has been successfully installed onto your computer when:
    1. The Application Details window lets you know when your installation is finished.

    2. A shortcut global icon has been added to your desktop tray in the lower right-hand side of your screen (it will show as being grayed out since you are not connected to the VPN).

Logging into VPN

  1. In the desktop tray in the lower right-hand side of your screen, left-click the globe icon (shortcut for the GlobalProtect VPN app).
  2. Enter vpn.connect.cpp.edu in the Portal Address text field.
    1. Click the Connect button.

  3. On the CPP-branded login page:
    1. Enter your BroncoName in the BroncoName text field.
    2. Enter your BroncoPassword in the password text field.
    3. Click Log In.
    4. For security, the Cal Poly Pomona multi-factor authentication window may appear.  Select whether you would like a push notification sent to you or to enter a passcode.  See eHelp for more info or to set up your multi factor verification for faster processing in the future.
  4. You should now be connected to the CPP VPN network (in your desktop tray, the GlobalProtect icon will display as the colors of the earth and have a checkmark on it).

Using the online VPN portal to install and log into VPN

Install GlobalProtect VPN on a personal computer

  1. Go to https://vpn.connect.cpp.edu.
  2. On the CPP-branded login page:
    1. Enter your BroncoName in the BroncoName text field.
    2. Enter your BroncoPassword in the password text field.
    3. Click Log In.
    4. For security, the Cal Poly Pomona multi-factor authentication window may appear.  Select whether you would like a push notification sent to you or to enter a passcode.  See eHelp for more info or to set up your multi factor verification for faster processing in the future.
  3. The PaloAlto Networks GlobalProtect Portal download window will appear.  Click the download link for the GlobalProtect agent you wish to download to your machine.

  4. Once the download is complete, either:
    1. Click the download arrow in the upper right corner of your browser window to locate the GlobalProtect file you just downloaded.  Note: You do not need admin rights to install this file onto your computer.
      1. Double-click the GlobalProtect file to open and install it onto your computer.
    2. Or, double-click to open the File Explorer icon, located in your task bar at the bottom of your screen.
      1. Click to select Downloads in the left-hand navigation pane.
      2. In the main window, locate and double-click the GlobalProtect file to install it.
  5. The GlobalProtect Setup Wizard window will appear.  Follow the prompts by clicking Next.

    Note: Choose a different installation folder other than the default if you would like to save the GlobalProtect application elsewhere.  Otherwise, click Next.

  6. The installer is ready, click next, to begin the install.

  7. Once the installation is complete, click Close to exit the Installation Wizard.

Logging into VPN

  1. In the desktop tray in the lower right-hand side of your screen, left-click the globe icon (shortcut for the GlobalVPN Protect app).
  2. A welcome page will appear, click Get Started.

  3. Enter vpn.connect.cpp.edu in the Portal Address text field.
